It is essential to have a kitchen which is organised, efficient, yet also practical and stylish. If you have recently relocated or are thinking about changing the appearance of your cooking area then you should check out the following kitchen design ideas. At the end of the day we all spend a lot of time in the kitchen, it is essential to create a living space which is modern and functional.

To begin with you should get hold of the latest energy efficient appliances. If your stove is more than five years old it will not use the latest electricity saving technology. Today with environmental concerns high on everyone’s agenda it is important choose kitchen appliances and equipment that are energy efficient. When choosing washing machines and dishwashers always compare the water usage and not just the energy consumption.

The style of the appliances can also be used to create a specific ambience. Try to choose as many items as possible that have the same style. This would allow for a sleeker more uniformed feel.

The countertops and work surfaces are the second most important aspect of a kitchen’s overall design. The type you choose to install will depend upon the size which is available as well as the style of appliances bought. The most popular materials for countertops today are stone such as marble and granite. These are seen as being highly durable whilst also easy to clean and maintain.

What type of floor do you have in your kitchen? Most of us would opt for a tiled kitchen floor though there are also other design options available such as wooden boards and stone slabs. To choose the best flooring you should consider factors such as the wear and tear, maintenance and cleaning, as well as the overall cost.

Face it, sometimes you get lost in your own kitchen! No, not an accusing finger is pointed at you. The fingers are ready to flick and give you a great kitchen-dom, where you do tasks like royalty. There’s no magic wand, no abracadabra… Just good kitchen design ideas you can start working on to achieve a stylish, functional area for the whole cooking and dining activities.

If you already have your kitchen, remodel and redesign. If you’re planning on getting one, choose the best design and structure, the whole area and placement of the kitchen, and the best materials at reasonable cost.

Ask yourself, what is my kitchen for? Is it simply for cooking and doing the dishes? Or do I love weekend breakfasts in my kitchen as well? Maybe you’re one of those families or belong to a large group of friends who love cooking and dining together. Or maybe you plan to just enjoy the wide range of dishes to prepare, but just you and your mate?

Answer these questions first, and then you have an idea what kitchen you will make, or what remodeling approaches will suit your plan the best. Put something interesting and helpful in your array of kitchen appliances and cabinets; the additions must ease your cooking activity and appeal to your diet, whether it’s the design, the placement or color. Also, be wary of innovations and trends that may just take up space and money, but not put to good use.

Determine the whole kitchen area, the spacing and placement of furniture and appliances in your kitchen. It helps a lot in deciding what comes and what goes, because your kitchen might be filled with things you’re not actually using. Knowing your kitchen dimension will help you prioritize the new arrangement and know your cost limits as well.

For your floors, cabinets and appliances, always bet on durability first; they should withstand frequent use. Secondly, their make and design, the color and sizes should have great effect on the whole kitchen design, compliment the idea of food and family, but be elegant as well. Good kitchen picture is achieved when your floor and cabinet, along with your kitchen appliances are useful and beautiful.

You’ve probably heard that color influences our moods. True, even truer in the colors you put in your kitchen! Be it the wall, the place mates and the dining wares, the colors do help (or wreck!) the whole kitchen setting and activities within. You might think a painting job is all your kitchen wants, then go for it! Choose the best color, pick out matching and complimenting curtains while at it.

The magic of having a wonderful cooking and dining experience is based on a workable, practical and cost-effective good kitchen design.

Mexican kitchens gesture people to come near with their humming activity, simmering aromas and colors. In Mexico, the kitchen is one of the busiest and most captivating rooms in the house. Basically, Mexican kitchens are rich with traditional elements, like a bright assortment of ceramic tiles, local crafts and handcrafted furniture.

If you want spice in your kitchen, the Mexican design is terrific. It does not matter if you have not decorated your kitchen before, a Mexican kitchen can be achieved by changing and adding minor accessories in your kitchen.

The Furniture and Accessories

Some accessories that you can apply minor changes to are dishware and tablecloths. Additionally, you can try adding colorful plants to the walls. An excellent remodeling of a kitchen would include modifications to the lighting fixtures, decorative items, flooring and wall color.

As for the furniture, it is not that important to look for a matching table and chair because a Mexican kitchen must have a variety of bright colors and probably rustic furniture. In fact, by trying to use items that have a painted distress finish, you can ultimately achieve the desired Mexican kitchen design.

Aside from the furniture, your window treatments are also important in order to achieve a Mexican kitchen. To achieve the desired style, you should consider trying a kitchen window with shutters or simple or wooden valance that is painted with distressed paint. There are several treatments available, which you can use for a Mexican design, especially if you go with fabrics as your window treatments. However, you should always remember to take extra care in order to avoid modern-looking treatments or heavy drapes.

What pull all the elements in your Mexican kitchen together are your decorative accessories. If you think that your Mexican kitchen is complete, you can always do better by adding different decorative accessories. You can focus on purchasing canisters, dishware and tablecloths with colors and patterns that match your kitchen design. These simple changes on your kitchen can create a huge impact. Additionally, if you want your kitchen to look like it was done by a professional, you can incorporate hand painted Mexican pottery.

The Walls of Your Kitchen

Now that you are aware of the furniture and other elements that you can incorporate with your Mexican kitchen, one thing that you should not forget is your wall covering. For a Mexican kitchen, the colors of your walls can make a huge difference. You can experiment on bright blues and hot colors, like red, which you can incorporate either on your wall or accessories. Faux paint resembling a pattern or stucco is an excellent option for your walls.

It is not important to be fancy with your wall or even spend huge amounts of money. However, if you are worried about adding too much color, you can simply paint the walls with a neutral shade and instead, place the colors on your floors or decorations.

Do not also forget to add decorations on your walls. You can add hand painted murals or hand vintage Mexico travel prints to the walls if you really want to bring Mexico into your kitchen. More so, Mexican platters, pottery plates hung in wrought iron holders and shelves are excellent ideas for the kitchen but do not forget to fill them with interesting and colorful Mexican clay jugs.

A kitchen’s design should reflect your way of life. It’s not just a place to prepare meals or to dine together with the family – it is a place where they can bond together in conversation and love, while enjoying a home-cooked meal.

Designing your kitchen is not a simple matter. It involves paying attention to a lot of details like the layout, its use, the comfort, as well as the different furniture and fixtures that you plan to put in it.

Idea Of A Kitchen

The kitchen should reflect the family’s needs, as well as the different routines that are common in a family household. You need to know the actual use of your kitchen and how it can meet your standards.

First, you need to have some idea on what a kitchen should look like. You can browse through different kitchen layouts from magazines, catalogues, and even some pictures on the Internet. You need to gather as many ideas as you can to improve its functionality as the center of your household.

Now that you have the idea on your model kitchen, you need to decide on how you want your kitchen laid out. Take into consideration storage areas, cabinets, appliances, dining table, and so on. Lay them all out so that everything is convenient enough to be within reach when you need them. Also, you need to designate the actual working area of your kitchen, which is quite separate from your dining. This will eliminate any problems later in regards to space and convenience.

Now that you have mapped out your kitchen, you need to think of a style for it. You decide on a single theme for your kitchen so that it wouldn’t look like a hodgepodge of colors and styles – which will ruin the overall design and layout that you have planned.

Common Kitchen Layout

A common kitchen layout includes three basic areas to concentrate on: 1) storage area, 2) working area, and 3) dining area.

The storage and working area must not be far from each other. The ingredients that you use, as well as the utensils for cooking must be within reach of where you plan to prepare the daily meals. Common placement of the working area is in the middle of the kitchen, with the storage cabinets is either behind or underneath.

Hanging cabinets may also be used to maximize ground space for other appliances and furniture. You can even incorporate counter-tops to be used as a table to store or place your implements, ingredients or even the meals after cooking them.

The dining area does not necessarily have to be far from the kitchen workspace. Your dining table can be placed in one corner of the kitchen so that the clutter of the area will not ruin the overall mood during meals. You can even place the dining area separately in an adjoining room, if you wish.

If you might notice it, a kitchen has a certain flow for its operation. You need to determine how you plan to work in the kitchen so that you can easily design it to accommodate your rhythm – the more comfortable you are with the kitchen layout, the faster your preparation time would be, and less mess it would make.

Asian kitchens are truly elegant and symmetrical in nature because of the fine attention to finish and detail. If you’re eyeing on getting the same clean and chic style, make sure you know the right colors to use, the decors and the materials. Consistency and symmetry are two of the most important qualities of an Asian kitchen. Here are a few guidelines for yours.

The Materials

Bamboo immediately creates a wonderful Asian feel to your kitchen. You can use bamboo independently as a plant decoration. However, other more creative ideas would be to split it then line your cupboards, one part of the wall or chairs. You can also line the lower areas of your island counter or sink. Smaller bamboo stalks with leaves can be glued on to cabinet doors and areas over the sink for a Japanese feel.

Silk is very versatile and adds some Chinese influence into your Asian kitchen. You can buy silk with beautiful prints and hang them on the wall. Other silks preferably dark red, orange and pink can be made into table cloths, mats and coasters. Install a wooden frame over the island counter and hang white silk on it together with pots, pans and utensils.

Chrome is very popular among Asians. Choose chrome silver or gold pans, pots and utensils. You can select your refrigerator, oven, stoves and sinks in this manner too. Accessorize drawer pulls and knobs with by choosing chrome ones. The gleam of this material will help add to the sleekness and symmetry that you are trying to create.

Along with chrome, wood is also great for Asian kitchens. Woks, wooden mortar and pestle as well as serving ware look excellent when displayed openly. Since black, onyx and dark marble are favorite materials when it comes to Asian countertops and sinks, the light color of natural wood is a wonderful compliment.

Asian Colors and Decors

Popular Asian colors are red, white, black and dark brown. To add an oriental feel, use some gold on red or black with red. Silver also provides a cooling accent. Chrome kitchen utensils, pots and pans will give a nice contrast. Use 3 to 4 main colors at most. You may want to use plants as well to neutralize everything. A single flower on a vase is stylish enough. Assorted fruits in a large bowl or dish also look great.

As for decors, tea sets are almost indispensable pieces in an oriental style Asian kitchen. Wooden wall panels with hidden yellow lights behind make great decorations too. You can carve or paint Chinese characters and symbols on the panels for a more dramatic touch.

Setting chopsticks, Thai toothpicks and other native pieces will compliment your overall theme. Utilitarian rice chests are very aesthetic and useful. Hand-forged ironware are very bold as well so you may want to use one or two only at most. You can store condiments in them when not in use. Feel free to add or mix furniture with different Asian influences. Japanese cabinets will still provide a warm effect beside exotic woodworks from Korea.

For light fixtures, hanging green or red lanterns are excellent. You may also place simple ceiling lights or sconces on kitchen posts. Avoid fluorescent since it ruins the elegance of the reds and golds. Handcrafted paper lamps or candles are beautiful additions in creating the perfect Asian ambiance.

Traditional kitchens are basically influenced by old American and European designs of the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. The area should depict a very formal and classy appearance while being equally functional as well. When designing a traditional kitchen, you have more room for resourcefulness since you’re free to use and combine pieces belonging in those eras.

The Different Styles

There are so many styles to choose from. Victorian is one of the most popular designs which incorporate intricate and sophisticated pieces. Moulding and trimming are basic including the use of dark and polished wood. The main idea of a traditional Victorian kitchen is to provide elegance. Arch doors, raised panels and wooden cabinet carvings are the norm plus other metal and brass works featured in drawer and cabinet handles and knobs.

Traditional Georgian is another formal design which uses a lot of wood like mahogany, oak and walnut. Cabinets, square panel raise doors, moulding, counters and furniture should most likely have wooden accents. Heavy crown moulding is used as well as high cabinets that reach the ceiling. Light fixtures in this design are properly placed to compliment the woodwork.

Other traditional designs include Edwardian, Regency, Neoclassical, Italianate, American, Shaker and Colonial. These designs basically incorporate woodwork as evidenced by mahogany or walnut cabinetry and raised panel cabinet doors. Crown and rope mouldings and other trims are also ideal. You can add antique items and appliances to add more drama. Hanging antique lamps are great as well as wall panels with hidden yellow lights. A modern fusion would use yellow ceiling lights. Window frames also present polished woodwork.

Some of the items in a traditional kitchen would seem built-in because of the generous use of mahogany, cherry or walnut. Breakfast counters, island tops and sinks will most likely have wooden trims. The counters may be marble on top. As for accents, black is allowed but is not very common in traditional Georgian kitchens. Colors are generally chosen to compliment the woodwork so neutral tones like white, beige or cream are ideal.

Some traditional kitchens are purely made of oak. These should not be mistaken for country however. The Shaker style is rather different since it is bolder and solid compared to country. Oak kitchens like to use a lot of dark and heavy wood with very minimal use of other materials like marble and slate. Oak is almost always polished for a very clean and classic appearance.

Aside from Wood

Stainless steel faucets, pans, ovens, pots and utensils will compliment the wood further. Sinks may be made of slate or stone. The floor is typically hardwood but you can also choose sandstone, marble or solid white or black tiles. For decors, a couple of antique pieces will do, preferably brass, metal or wood. Hanging a single white towel over the oven handle is enough to create a dramatic effect. Traditional kitchens aim for a classic and clean appearance so all utensils and kitchen items may have to be stored in drawers and cabinets.

Another modern style is adding a skylight which makes the room come to life in the morning and at midday. Look for antique-looking appliances. A black refrigerator will look better. Try to stick to one color when choosing appliances. One or two green plants will neutralize the earth tones more experiment which works.

Spanish kitchens are very dramatic and convey a feeling of closeness especially if a lot of loved ones are around. There are several ways to explore your creativity when designing the Spanish way. You have the opportunity of working with different colors and materials so feel free to choose and do which fits your home and interest best.

Furniture, Countertops and More

A common Spanish design would place an island countertop in the middle of the kitchen. This primarily serves as a preparation area for slicing, dicing and marinating. You can also install the stoves on the countertop as well. There are designs wherein the island is separate from the breakfast counter, sinks and stoves. You can experiment dark wood, marble and copper in the design to create the right atmosphere.

Space is essential in Spanish kitchens so you may need to balance furniture properly so as not to overwhelm the area. The counters should have built-in drawers and cabinets where you can store kitchen utensils, big bowls and other pieces. One or two independent furniture would be enough to store all your kitchen items. It is recommended that you get furniture with French doors or tall slender legs which provides a Spanish feel because of the extra space.

Cabinets may also have French doors. Preferably, all furniture should be made of wood. The wood may be simply polished or painted with earth tones. Light is very important so allow a lot of it to come through windows with light and thin curtains. French patio doors are also ideal for added light. Installing a skylight at one end of the kitchen would be great as well.

Place wall panels over the sink and on one wall then fix fluorescent lights behind which will serve as night lights. Aside from these, install a beautiful antique hanging lamp over the island counter. The lamp may have around 3 to 5 bulbs creating a dramatic effect on the entire kitchen. Green, blue and cream tiles are excellent to work with. The floor may be made of hardwood or grainy tiles as well. It provides a rustic feel reminiscent of the Old World. You can make a pattern by adding tiles with floral designs particularly on breakfast counters and over the sinks.

Accessorizing

Place a hanging wooden frame over the island countertop. The fixture would be supported by black rustic chains attached to the ceiling. This is where you can hang spices and utensils creating the perfect Spanish ambiance. Glass wares should be placed in cabinets with French doors where they can be presented well. Affix hooks on one wall where you can hang pots and pans.

As for color, green, blue, yellow and cream are some of the basic Spanish kitchen colors. You may try combining two or three as long as everything looks consistent and relaxing. The colors should try to maximize the space by properly disseminating light. Mouldings are allowed but avoid very intricate styles. You can simply line the ceiling with wooden bars. Windows may be lined with natural wood as well.

A Spanish kitchen has a very earthy feel and makes use of a lot of light and space. Aim to acquire all these when choosing your materials and designing to get the look and feel that you’ve always wanted.

A Mediterranean kitchen can be one of the most dramatic areas in your house. The whole family will truly appreciate the similar feeling of being close to tranquil shores and the warm sun. You need to know the basic materials and colors to create the perfect environment though. Here are some tips on how to design your rustic and elegant kitchen.

Choosing the Right Color

If you’re planning to have Greece’s captivating environment, blue and white are great combinations. These colors will create the soothing sense of being close to the Aegean Sea. Use lime whitewash on countertops, some parts of the floor or tabletops. Windows and doors usually have wooden borders so you may paint these blue or green. The main idea is to make a beautiful contrast with the solid light color.

If you want the African environment, stick to earth colors like brown, orange, brick red and beige. These evoke the similar feeling of being in the hot deserts of the Mediterranean. Terracotta tiles are perfect both on floors and walls. You can paint walls dark orange while giving a lighter hue to window and door borders. If you’re using beige, it is recommended to add another darker color like brown for a nice contrast.

Creating an atmosphere reminiscent to that of Portugal in your Mediterranean kitchen requires more colors like blue, green, purple, pink, yellow and some of the earth hues. Your goal is to imitate the beautiful gardens and vineyards so green and flower colors are vital. You may want to experiment with lavender and yellow. A flower mural is acceptable in this design. Earth-color tiles will provide a good contrast with the bright tones.

A Mediterranean kitchen tries to infuse both a warm yet soothing feel so if the earth tones and bright colors begin to make the room seem too hot, neutralize with pastel colors like lime, sky blue and cream. Open windows act as neutralizers too by bringing in cool air and displaying the blue sky and greens outside.

Items to Add

Clay, ceramic and mosaic are common items found in Mediterranean kitchens. Because of the warm effect created by the earth colors, ceramics are important to neutralize and add a cool atmosphere. Mosaics are best placed on spots where they stand out immediately like countertops and above the sink. You may leave clay pots in one part as display. Wooden utensils and kitchen items are preferred over stainless steel ones.

Egyptian and Turkish mats and coasters make great decorations. There are also towels with African designs so feel free to hang these over the sink or the oven handle. You can have counter chairs custom-made as well. Change the cushioning or repaint with brighter tones for a warmer feel. Handmade glasses, mugs and plates are usually placed on open shelves mounted on the walls. These are both functional and decorative in nature.

Natural stones and unpolished marble are perfect for sinks and countertops in your Mediterranean kitchen. You can also invest in a few antique lighting fixtures like a hanging lamp or sconces to get that rustic look. Candle holders are very dramatic too especially when planning a romantic dinner. Avoid heavy drapes on the windows and allow as much light as you can. White silk or cotton is effective as curtains.

From France, the term of having the best food may seem a little too cliché, but there is no denying when it comes to style, especially when choosing a French kitchen design.

There are several changes for this type, but similarities can be found, especially from the Italians, where a chopping table is at the center of the kitchen area. As for the rest, like placement for the refrigerator, stove and oven, the French like to cook without any obstructions from the articles in the kitchen as well as people gathering to observe.

The main object for any French kitchen design is the visibility factor, added to the design of tables and chairs that would give an appearance of a café. Still, the work area for a French kitchen is set on having a long table where everything can be prepared, leaving the space from the wall to install shelves, cupboards and the usual appliances.

Floorings can be done using marble or seasoned mahogany, to give it a more rustic look, along with varnished shelves and cupboards for amore regal style. Hooks for pots, pans and other kitchen utensils are placed near the stove for easy accessibility, and most often using classic city tones that is similar to the old apartments found in Paris. Furnishings such as tables serve little purpose in a way, but it can add a touch of class for people who want to serve breakfast for a small family. This is mainly to their history in entertaining visitors for a drink or two while imbibing on cheese during the French Revolution.

Most modern designers have reshaped the way French kitchen designs have appeared. For most, using some of the more affordable and modular materials like plastics and synthetic woods would allow them to create a more modern French kitchen. Bar tables are also an integral part of the French design, allowing the cook to place everything within hand’s reach and can be installed with a sink to wash up the said ingredients.

Decoration has made a significant improvement, although some who still appreciate a more classical look would prefer placing a few empty wine bottles and champagne glasses on cover-less shelves that wouldn’t hide anything. This is a more important part of the French look, where nothing can be considered as an obstruction and anything can be within reach.

Old furniture works best to give it the kitchen an Old World look, followed by doing a bit of painting if wallpaper is out of the question. Mainly anything of floral design or with food can serve as a good distraction for visitors, followed by warm tones to create a pleasant atmosphere that can’t be found in an oven. Hammered steel to decorate some of the corners and sidings will add a more dramatic effect, along with a heavy emphasis to strength that can only be found in France as they wouldn’t ask for anything more than wood.

Designers have been reshaping various methods when it comes to a basic French kitchen design, allowing to make use of any space, limited or not, in order to make cooking an enjoyable task for the home owner. Of course some materials may be hard to find while others would prefer going for a more modern look, but with the French, they make anything stylish by just reflecting on objects that showed strength and style.

For most people, a kitchen can also be considered as a makeshift family room, where people can hold family meetings or just casual small talk, it seems that people are more comfortable to talk to someone when food or drinks are available in the area. Italian kitchen design has come a ling way to meet the trend of the times.

This idea what sparked some interior designers when it comes to having kitchens the Italian style. For the most part, the basic elements of an Italian kitchen of 40 or 50 years ago is having a large table where everything is prepared from chopping up meat, vegetables and other things like kneading noodles. Anything else like an iron stove and oven and racks would come in on a close second.

Today, modern Italian kitchen design still has the basic principle, which is it doesn’t matter how big or small the workspace. For other designers, they concentrate on getting in as many shelves and creating a more Old World style by introducing polished wood or having a mahogany table at the center. Countertops are meant to place various objects for cooking, and would only keep it that way.

The center table can been redesigned in such a way it could also serve as the main sink, with various compartments to place plates, pots, pans and various utensils. Hooks are also aligned near the stove area, which can be accessed easily to pull out potholders, some knives and the like. It’s all about cramming all the space in the four sides of the wall with various shelves, cupboards, and enough space to place the necessary appliances.

There have been various means and designs that would allow small kitchen areas to be made with as little room as possible, plus decorating the wall with a few objects that gives Italy its flavor. A small area to store wine is also used, although not necessary for some designers and would opt to having a wine cellar of it’s own. But the general aspect is to allow more free space on the floor to place a small dining table for everyone to use.

Classical Italian kitchen design may not be bet suited for most Americans, unless they don’t mind the feel of hardened earth inside the home. But for modern ones, they often competed with using cheaper material without losing the aspect of creating more storage spaces.

Iron-wrought handles and knobs for drawers and cupboards can give a feel of an Italian look a it reflects history that still exists even today. The main point of Italian kitchen design is to allow anything old and new to be placed together in a room that allows the entire family to enjoy and to gather during dinner. As for decoration, hanging pictures like souvenirs from Italy or art replicas from the Italian masters can liven up the kitchen the way it should be. This also applies to the religious, since Italians are mainly Catholic.

Designers have experimented in using old items and furnishings to create an authentic Italian kitchen look, plus a little more then it comes to flooring, which can be made of aged wood, marble or stone, then a few decals to create a more inviting look into the kitchen. It’s all about affordability that doesn’t need to spend an arm and a leg when it comes to Italian kitchen designs, and best suited for a close-knit family to gather and enjoy a meal together.
